Essential oils that promote happiness and good mood

Aromatic plants have been the basis for herbal and botanical medicines and remedies for thousands of years. In fact, they’re the roots of today’s pharmaceuticals.

Aromatic plants, essences and oils have been used for thousands of years in ceremonies, beauty care, food preparation, preservation, as incense and for perfumes. It’s common for Egyptians to be given credit as the first culture to use aromatic extracts for beauty care, culinary uses, spiritual and physical wellbeing. But it was the Greek physician Hippocrates who studied and documented the medicinal influence of over 300 plants. He used to prescribe aromatic treatments for fallen soldiers on the battlefields and strongly believed in the medicinal benefit of fumigation with aromatics; used to fumigate the city of Athens to combat the plague.

Jean Valnet, a Parisian medical doctor and army surgeon, colleague of René-Maurice Gattefossé inventor of modern aromatherapy, began to use essential oils as antiseptics.  It is said that he ran out of his antibiotic supply and out of desperation began using essential oils on the injured from the Indochina war from 1948-1959. They proved to fight infections saving the lives of many as a result.  Essential Oils are derived from plants and are effective in improving mood and getting rid of stress and negative emotions. Inhaling their aromas can stimulate areas of your limbic system, which is a part of your brain that plays a role in emotions, behaviors, sense of smell and long-term memory.

They are used as an alternative or complementary treatment for many symptoms and you can use them in a variety of ways:

  • Diffusing them into the air
  • Using them in bath and spa products
  • Applying them to the skin when diluted in lotion or carrier oils
  • Spraying them into the air
  • Breathing them in directly from the container
