TLC FOR ME! The importance of self-love.

“All you need is love” says a popular song by The Beatles, isn’t that true? We all like it when we are complimented, hugged and cared for by friends or family. It makes us happy and energized to feel loved by others. Pat Mumby, PhD, co-director of the Loyola Sexual Wellness Clinic and professor, Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Neurosciences, Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine (SSOM) says that "falling in love causes our body to release a flood of feel-good chemicals that trigger specific physical reactions".

Let's fall in love with ourselves! Practicing more self-love and self-compassion will enable us to ride smoothly thru everyday challenges and find more pleasure in the things we do.

Self-love means to learn to treat yourself with respect, compassion, kindness, flexibility and embrace your own imperfections. Often times, we do not make enough time to clear our minds, meditate on our ups and downs and nurture our body and soul. Deep down you know it’s essential to love yourself enough so that you can genuinely love others.

Self-love has many powerful benefits:

  • Helps you make healthier and wiser choices with a healthier mindset and attitude (positive thinking)
  • Increases self-forgiveness and self-confidence
  • Helps you to be more tolerant of your flaws and weaknesses
  • Increases the feelings of acceptance and compassion for others and for yourself
  • Helps you make connect better with people
  • Improves your mental health (decreases anxiety)

How to give yourself the gift of self-love? These tips might help:

  1. Prioritize self-care and rest
Eat healthy food, exercise as much as you can and get enough rest. Quality sleep starts with turning off your TV, closing your laptop, and implementing a couple of healthy sleep habits. If you have difficulty falling asleep, Unisom SleepTabs® are clinically proven to help you fall asleep an average of 33% faster. You’ll sleep through the night and wake up recharged.
  2. Let go of your emotional distress
You need to heal emotionally ASAP. Find help and heal old wounds so you can enjoy your present with a clear mind.
  3. Think positive! You may need to retrain your brain, but it is possible to look at the positive side of things instead of the negative. A positive attitude is contagious!
  4. Repeat: I forgive myself
You should be as forgiving with yourself as you are with others, don’t you blame yourself for any tiny thing that didn’t go the way you wanted.
  5. More gratitude = more happy days
Acknowledge all the opportunities each day brings you and be grateful for them, even if they weren’t great. Bad experiences have their teachings.
  6. Say NO more often
Sometimes we say YES to things that we feel obligated to, but that doesn’t give us joy. Don’t feel guilty saying no and spend that time and energy on doing something that makes you happy.
  7. Reward & indulge
Your hard work deserves recognition. Spoil yourself a little!
  8. Plan adventures!
Escaping our daily routine has remarkable psychological benefits, more so if you go exploring on nature’s beauty. Unplug, get outside, go on escapades, breathe and relax.
  9. No more unrealistic goals
Don’t hold yourself to unachievable goals, you can’t do it all. Setting yourself up for failure is the opposite of self-love. Keep it real!
